Reader Reviews
“This novel is an original and entertaining romp through Elizabethan England and high-seas adventure.
Anchored by a sibling bond that is both touching and mischievous, the story follows William Hope and his sister Katherine. They navigate political conspiracies, magical charms, and outlandish pirate hijinks.
A vibrant plot, packed with unexpected twists, often swings from tender emotional beats to riotous satire with impressive flair. Characters are a highlight, William’s reluctant heroism and Katherine’s spirited wit are fascinating, while the flamboyant Captain Scarlett steals every scene with theatrical charm.
The writing is bold, wordy, and humorous, sometimes reaching the complexity of Dickens. Vance’s dialogue sparkles with wit, and the world-building, particularly the sprawling Theobalds estate and the Maiden Bride, feels cinematic.
This is a well-crafted novel brimming with character, heart, and originality. For readers who enjoy historical fiction with a satirical twist and a dash of magic, this is a swashbuckling delight not to be missed.”
I've always loved Chris Vance as an actor, especially since I grew up watching him in various roles. I was surprised to learn that he was writing books. I really enjoyed this fantasy historical adventure.
The story is engagingly written, with action-packed scenes that add to the suspense. The lively writing brings the story to life and the immersive world-building allows you to dive straight into the story.
I also found it helpful and interesting that the dates of the events were mentioned; this ensured that you could always follow the story. I always love it when authors come up with appropriate chapter headings, as they give the book a certain something. The characters are wonderfully written and developed, and I quickly grew to love them.
It's a fantastically written book that I couldn't put down, and I will definitely be reading the other books in the series!
A gripping yarn from first to last page! The voyages of the Maiden Bride look set to join the Dawn Treader as a staple of ocean and ship fantasy stories. Perhaps a Treasure Island for a new generation?
The story keeps up a cracking pace, building our emotional attachment to the main characters. A really good read which at the end leaves you wanting to know more about the continuing adventures of William Hope.
Couldn't put the book down. Think Uncharted game, with swash buckling action and Spanish Gold hunting, mixed in with Jeffery Archer style writing from the Clifton series, and you have this adventure book!
Chris Vance adds his own brand of humour to make it a more modern reading. Looking forward to the next 3 editions in the series
A magical, high-seas adventure with depth, wit, and a whole lot of heart. A truly unique and exciting fantasy tale, totally absorbing.
